We Are Looking for Volunteers Who Actually Care About Food, Climate, and Community
Something is happening in Nigerian communities that does not get talked about enough. The foods that once anchored local diets are disappearing. Changing rainfall patterns are disrupting what farmers can grow and when. Families are navigating rising food prices while public health systems struggle to keep up with diet-related illness. And most of the people sitting in the middle of all of this, the young people, the women, the community health workers, have very little access to practical, accurate, culturally grounded nutrition knowledge.
EKO Nutrition Empowerment Foundation was built to change that. And right now, we are looking for people who want to help us do it.
What EKO Nutrition Is
We are a Nigerian nonprofit working at the intersection of nutrition education, food security, and climate-smart food systems. Our name carries deliberate meaning. Eko, from the Yoruba, means to teach and pass on knowledge. Echo means amplifying the voices and realities of the communities we serve. Eco centres ecology, sustainability, and the health of the food systems that sustain all of us.
We do not just run awareness campaigns. We design programmes grounded in evidence, built around community realities, and measured for actual impact. We work with youth, women, children, and community leaders. We train nutrition advocates. We connect food systems thinking to climate action in ways that make sense to the people living through both.
What We Are Building in 2026
Our flagship initiative this year is the Youth-Led Climate-Smart Nutrition Hub, a structured programme that trains young people to become nutrition and food systems advocates in their own communities. It is our first major field pilot, running through December 2026, and it is the kind of programme we have been working toward since the organisation was founded.
This is not a programme where young people attend a talk and go home. It is about building real capacity. Training that sticks. Youth who leave understanding not just what a balanced diet looks like, but why food systems matter, how climate change is reshaping what communities can eat, and how to communicate that knowledge to the people around them.
We need a capable, committed volunteer team to help us deliver it well.
Who We Are Looking For
We have open roles across six functional teams: Programmes and Impact, Communications and Media, Research Learning and Evaluation, Finance and Compliance, Partnerships and Resource Mobilisation, and People and Community.
That means we are not only looking for nutritionists. We need writers and content creators. We need people who understand data and monitoring. We need finance volunteers who care about compliance. We need communicators who can translate science into stories that reach real people. We need partnership builders who understand the Nigerian development landscape.
What all of these roles share is a commitment to doing serious work seriously. EKO Nutrition is a young organisation, but we are not casual about our mission. We document our work. We measure our impact. We hold ourselves accountable. The volunteers who thrive here are the ones who bring that same standard to whatever they do.
What You Will Get From This
We will not pretend that volunteering is the same as paid employment. But we will tell you honestly what this experience offers.
You will work on a real programme with a real theory of change, not a hypothetical exercise. You will gain documented experience in your functional area. You will be part of a team that takes its work seriously and treats volunteers as genuine contributors, not background support. You will have your contributions recognised in our organisational reporting and communications. And you will be building something that matters, in a space where youth leadership in food systems and public health is genuinely needed.
For students, early-career professionals, and anyone wanting to build credible NGO and public health experience, this is a real opportunity.
